Concrete Driveways, Slabs & Pads in Ocala, FL: What Homeowners Need to Know

Whether you're building a new driveway, pouring a slab for a garage or shop, or preparing a building pad for new construction, concrete work in Ocala comes with specific requirements that most homeowners don't know about until they're already into the project. Understanding what the City of Ocala and Marion County require — and what good concrete work actually involves — helps you get a result that lasts instead of one you're replacing in five years.

This guide covers the types of concrete work we do in Marion County, what it costs, what the permit process looks like, and what separates a quality pour from a problem pour.

Types of Concrete Work in Ocala, FL

Concrete work covers a wider range than most people expect. These are the most common projects we handle in Marion County:

Driveways
Residential driveways are one of the most common concrete projects we complete in Ocala. A properly poured driveway handles the weight of passenger vehicles, SUVs, and pickup trucks without cracking — and in Marion County's climate, it needs to handle seasonal moisture and ground movement as well. We also pour commercial driveways and parking areas for businesses across the county.

Building pads and slabs
A building pad is the concrete foundation slab on which a structure sits — a garage, a shop building, a barn, or an accessory structure. Getting the pad right is the most important part of any new build: if the slab is out of level, poorly compacted, or undersized, every problem traces back to it. We've poured building pads for residential projects, commercial buildings, and agricultural structures across Marion County.

Footers
Footers run along the perimeter of a structure below grade and carry the load of the walls above them. They're a required part of any permitted structure in Florida. Depth, width, and reinforcement requirements are set by the Florida Building Code based on the structure being built.

Patios and covered slabs
Covered concrete slabs extend usable living space in Florida's climate and are one of the more popular additions we build. A well-poured covered slab — with proper drainage slope, clean edges, and the right finish — adds functional outdoor space for years without maintenance issues.

Sidewalks and parking areas
Commercial and residential sidewalks, parking areas, and concrete aprons are part of site work on most construction and renovation projects we handle.

What Does Concrete Work Cost in Ocala, FL?

Concrete costs in Marion County for 2025:

Standard residential driveway: $4,000–$9,000

The range depends primarily on size (square footage), thickness, and whether any site prep work is needed. A standard two-car driveway runs approximately 18'–20' wide and 20'–30' long. Longer driveways on larger lots cost proportionally more.

Building pad or slab: $5–$14 per square foot installed

This is a wide range because slab complexity varies. A simple slab for a storage shed on a flat, already-cleared lot is at the low end. A building pad for a garage with proper footers, rebar, vapor barrier, and a smooth finish is at the higher end.

Covered concrete slab (patio/lanai): $3,500–$8,000

Depending on size and whether the cover structure is part of the same project.

Decorative/stamped concrete: Add $3–$6 per square foot. Stamped concrete that mimics stone, brick, or pavers is a common choice for front entries, pool decks, and patios where appearance matters.

Concrete resurfacing: $2–$5 per square foot. For existing concrete that's structurally sound but looks worn, resurfacing with a bonded overlay is a cost-effective way to restore the appearance without full replacement.

Marion County and City of Ocala Concrete Specs

For driveways within the City of Ocala:

  • Minimum 4 inches thick for passenger vehicles; 6 inches recommended for heavier vehicles
  • Minimum concrete strength: 3,000 PSI
  • Fiber reinforcement or wire mesh (6x6 welded wire fabric) required
  • Maximum driveway width at the property line: 24 feet for residential
  • Minimum driveway width: 10 feet
  • A driveway apron permit is required when the driveway connects to a city street

For unincorporated Marion County:

Marion County follows the Florida Building Code for all structural concrete. For driveways that connect to county roads, a Marion County driveway access permit is required before work begins, handled through the Marion County Development Review Division.

For building pads and slabs:

Any slab that is part of a permitted structure requires a building permit and inspections. The required inspections typically include a footing/footer inspection (before concrete is poured) and a slab inspection. Do not pour concrete before these inspections are completed.

Why Site Preparation Is the Most Important Part

The quality of a concrete pour depends more on what happens before the truck arrives than what happens after. In Marion County, this matters more than in many other areas because of Florida's sandy, sometimes unstable soil.

Grading and drainage: Water has to go somewhere when it rains — and in Ocala, it rains a lot. A slab or driveway that doesn't slope away from the structure, or that sits in a low spot where water collects, will have problems. We grade the base to ensure positive drainage before any concrete is placed.

Compaction: Florida's sandy soil compresses under load if it hasn't been properly compacted first. We compact the subbase with mechanical equipment. A driveway poured over loose fill will sink and crack — sometimes within a year.

Base material: Properly prepared concrete pads and driveways are built on a compacted layer of crushed stone or gravel that provides a stable, well-drained base. This adds material cost, but it's the difference between concrete that lasts 20 years and concrete that cracks in 5.

Forming: Clean, level forms set the shape of the pour and determine the final elevation and slope. Forms that are out of level produce concrete that is out of level — and once it's poured, it's permanent.

How Long Does Concrete Work Take?

Concrete cures on its own schedule. A poured slab reaches initial set in 24–48 hours but continues curing for 28 days. For driveways, we typically ask that vehicles stay off for at least 7 days after the pour.

  • Standard driveway: 1–3 days of work, then curing time
  • Building pad with footers: 1 week for site prep, forming, inspections, and pour
  • Covered slab with structure: 1–2 weeks total

Permits for Concrete Work in Ocala: What Requires One

Usually yes, for:

  • Any driveway that connects to a city or county road (driveway access permit required)
  • Any slab that is part of a permitted structure (garage, shop, addition)
  • Any commercial concrete work

Usually no, for:

  • A standalone backyard patio with no structure attached (verify with your local building department before starting)
  • Concrete resurfacing of existing surfaces

When in doubt, we check for you. Unpermitted work creates problems when you sell the property, file a homeowner's insurance claim, or need to pull a permit for future work.
